About Emma

Emma enjoys a professional performing career alongside teaching singing. She trained at The London School of Musical Theatre and has performed in theatre, arenas and opera houses as far as China and America. She has appeared in West End musicals such as:

  • The Phantom of the Opera (World and European tours)

  • Cats (playing the leading role of Grizabella)

  • Soloist for the BBC

  • Soloist for the Last Night of the Proms

  • Featured soloist for The Thursford Christmas Spectacular.

She is classically trained, having started out as a professional choral singer but has transitioned to a more contemporary style of singing since entering the world of musical theatre. As a professional performer herself, she knows what it is to overcome nerves and confidence issues, to struggle with a particular technical aspect of singing or to have an upcoming important audition.

As a Teacher

Emma is a holistic and highly bespoke vocal coach who provides a safe and welcoming environment for absolute beginners all the way through to those hoping to pursue singing professionally. The technique she generally uses is one of releasing abdominal tension, ensuring sufficient breath control and for more advanced learners, looking at larynx placement. More than anything, she believes that good and safe singing comes from feeling confident and happy and so this is something which underpins all her teaching. She teaches a range of styles, from light classical and musical theatre to pop and jazz. Emma believes strongly in encouraging her students to find their own style and voice rather than copying the latest pop star.

She never underestimates the courage it can take to start lessons as a beginner and so is particularly experienced in putting new singers at ease, ensuring they build confidence and start to feel comfortable singing alone. All her students are provided with a recorded set of warm-ups and exercises so that can easily practise at home and build technique and stamina outside of the classroom.

Emma has significant teaching experience, having taught a variety of students from absolute beginners to those studying singing as part of their degree or course. She has taught in various schools and has expertise in teaching those with neurodiversity. She holds an enhanced DBS certificate which can be viewed upon request.  She works with the student to keep clear goals in mind and to ensure students always have a say in the songs they are singing. If a student would also like to learn to read music whilst singing, Emma can support with this too.
